[Monday]
Dear
family,
Only now,
Monday, I get to writing you. Yesterday the weather was so beautiful that in
the morning, after church, I took a walk through the Bois d’Epinoy almost to
Carvin.
Then in the
afternoon I treated myself to an afternoon nap until 4. This warm weather makes
you so lazy.
And then I
still had to finish my essay (Subject:
How should an officer behave himself as a superior, and how should he treat his
subordinates?). You all know that I always wait till the last minute with these
things. And in the evening I of course couldn’t refuse to go along with the
others to our French shoemaker, and indulge myself with a few fried eggs and
beer. You’ve got to take every chance to improve on your French.
That is of
course no excuse at all, but you understood that already.
Yesterday I
received mail again. Apparently the mail only gets forwarded from Douvrin twice
a week.
So I
received again a whole load of parcels, including one each from the Bonerts,
Aunt Vollmer and A. Weyerbuschs (Please thank them for me), and mother’s letter
of 2nd May. Many thanks for everything. Please don’t send me eggs
and sausages (Bratwurst and that Fleischwurst) anymore. Both arrived
spoiled in this warm weather. But the butter, and everything else, was still in
good order.
I’ve
received the second fieldstove , as I already wrote you. You don’t have to send Hartspiritus [= solid fuel] now. The
stuff that came with the stove is also very good. It’s just a question of which
is cheaper.
By the way
didn’t you receive the picture I sent you from Auchy? Mother doesn’t write about
it at all. It would be a shame that just that one letter got lost. Our Leutnant took pictures of us yesterday,
I hope there are prints available.
